Albufeira isn't just a holiday destination — it's a year-round surf spot with conditions for every level.
Summer (June – September)
Summer is the best season for beginners. The Atlantic swells are smaller and more consistent, water temperatures reach 20–22°C, and the weather is sunny and warm.
- Wave height: 0.5–1.5m
- Water temperature: 19–22°C
- Wind: Light morning offshore, afternoon onshore
- Best for: Beginners and intermediate surfers
Galé Beach is particularly good in summer — the sandy bottom and gentle slope create perfect learning conditions.

Autumn (October – November)
Autumn brings the best combination of swell and weather.
The summer crowds thin out, the water is still warm, and the swells start building.
- Wave height: 1–2.5m
- Water temperature: 18–20°C
- Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers
"Autumn in the Algarve is a surfer's dream — warm water, consistent waves, and empty lineups. It's the season the locals look forward to most."
Winter (December – February)
Winter means bigger swells from North Atlantic storms. Albufeira's south-facing coast offers some protection, so you'll find surfable days when the west coast is too big.
- Wave height: 1–3m+
- Water temperature: 15–17°C
- Best for: Experienced surfers (wetsuits essential)

Spring (March – May)
Spring is underrated.
The swells are still active, the water starts warming up, and the tourist season hasn't begun.
Great value and uncrowded lineups.
- Wave height: 0.5–2m
- Water temperature: 16–19°C
- Best for: All levels
Best Time of Day
The morning is almost always best.
Light offshore winds create clean, glassy conditions.
By afternoon, the onshore breeze often chops up the surface.
Our surf lessons are scheduled in the morning for exactly this reason.
